Personal Profile »

I am currently seeking work as a web developer. Most of my experience to date has been front-end but I am seeking to further my understanding of back-end as well as front-end development if the opportunity is available. Since starting work as a web designer last year I have developed a considerable skill-set including professional-standard (X)HTML and CSS including HTML5 and CSS3, JavaScript/jQuery, integrating my designs into a content management system (WordPress), basic experience with back-end languages such as PHP and ASP.NET, and design using Photoshop CS3 and GIMP. I have completed a course on web design and learned largely in my spare time, but I find on the job experience to be far more valuable.

I have previously worked as a web designer and front-end developer, as a CAD technician for a construction company, as an electrician, and as a part time bartender whilst at college. I have learned valuable skills in each these roles and they have played an important part in my personal development.

Employment History »

(Listed in reverse chronological order)

Company: Netcars
Period: Sept 2011 - Jan 2012
Position: Web Developer and Designer
At Netcars I was responsible for all front-end development. I worked as part of a very close team in which we managed a large solution using ASP.NET in Visual Studio. I worked with excellent support but little guidance and I was very happy to take initiative and responsibility for my part of the tasks we were given. I found the position very challenging and stimulating since I had to ensure that my understanding of front-end development was solid enough that I could work with the extra complexity of actively collaborating with the team of developers and working to tight deadlines.

Company: Vivuki
Period: Feb 2011 - Sept 2011
Position: Web Developer and Designer
At Vivuki I played an important role in a small team of designers. I was the only member of the company experienced in developing content managed websites, as such I was tasked with all tasks where clients required a dynamic, content managed website application such as WordPress. I am not content with doing the bare minimum and I take great pride in my work; always doing my utmost to ensure that the clients I was working for at Vivuki were happy with the service they received from myself and the company.

Company: Hulley & Kirkwood
Period: Oct 2007 - Jan 2008
Position: CAD Technician
Hulley & Kirkwood is a building services consultancy. Since Hulley & Kirkwood is a consultancy rather than a contractor, at this company I was not involved in any of the later construction stages of the projects worked on. I did however put a lot of effort into this job including coding a drawing record and issue utility in my spare time at home using Visual Basic, which I enjoyed doing.

Company: N.G. Bailey & Co
Period: Aug 2001 - Sep 2007
Position: Apprentice electrician / CAD technician
NG Bailey is an industry leading mechanical and electrical building services contractor specialising in large industrial and commercial projects and also some residential projects such as apartment blocks.

At N.G. Bailey I was originally an apprentice electrician and later as a CAD technician. As an apprentice electrician I was responsible for working with teams of site engineers on installation projects whilst I was learning my trade and carrying out NVQ assessments. As a CAD technician my contractual responsibilities were to produce and maintain working and record drawings using AutoCAD but many of the less IT-experienced members of the office often asked me to resolve general computer problems such as network printer issues and I have always been more than happy to provide assistance.

Personal Interests »

I am a keen supporter of free and open-source software and I contribute to the community by actively participating in bug report programmes and helping other users in support forums. I have a genuine passion for working with computers; I already possess a considerable skill-set and I am very interested in expanding my computing knowledge and experience, particularly in the field of design and development on the internet.

I have enjoyed tinkering with computers from a very young age and have performed many hardware and software upgrades to my own systems. For this reason I am often tasked with helping out family and friends with computer problems and I am always happy to help them out. I also take great pleasure in learning languages including Python, PHP and C/C++. I use various operating systems at home including Microsoft Windows and Mac OS X and have considerable experience with several Linux-based distributions, which I generally prefer to use as they are more transparent and allow greater flexibility of use.

I have an interest in photography and in drawing both freehand and with a graphics tablet, I like to spend time doing creative activities such as this, I believe it to be good for the mind. I enjoy listening to music and like to spend time learning musical instruments, I can play a little on a piano and have recently learned to play the ukulele but I focus mainly on my acoustic guitar which I find a beautiful and relaxing instrument to play. I enjoy reading mainly non-fiction works on psychology, politics and technology and keep up to date on current issues via internet syndication feeds and magazines such as and Micro Mart.
